As part of the the celebration for the 41st birthday of the school, they had a field or sports day. This involved a few events. The first were running events that ranged in length according to the age of the kids. Then the big kids had a soccer tournament and the younger kids had games like sack races. After all the games they had a special lunch for all the kids in the cafeteria (usually only the kids boarding at the school eat there, the rest go home).
Before we get to the sports, here are two great pics of Camilo with his new friend. This guy had crashed into a window and was stunned when we found him. We held him for a bit and then he flew away, all good. Camilo was trying to see who is more colorful.
On to the races! For Camilo's class the race was one big lap of essentially a football field. It was his kindergarten class and the first graders (wearing blue). Camilo started off mid-pack but then things went bad. I was cheering for him and he got confused. He turned and started running towards me because he thought I was telling him to stop. Whoops! Then he got back on track and finished mid-pack. Good job for him in his first race and he would have done even better if I hadn't distracted him.
You can see him here in the back.
Good form!
On the far side of the field.
And after the finish line. He was happy with his performance.
For Amalia's class they had to do two laps. This was similar in length to races Amalia did a lot last summer in the track league so she knew the key for her was pacing herself.
At the start she kept herself contained.
And was mid-pack. Note that she ran against the girls in her class and they mostly had green shirts. She doesn't have the green shirt because they were given out the first days of the school year, long before we got here.
At the end of the first lap she was coming to the front as the rabbits started to fade. Like most kids, lots of them started way too fast. The boys race was actually quite funny as they sprinted the first 100m and almost walked the last 100m.
Coming through the first lap and she is in the lead and now it's time to make the others pay for going out too hard.
Although it's always good to look at your cheering section. Notice that she is totally within herself even though she is now in the lead.
At the end of the second lap, as she turns for home.
Can you see anyone behind her? Nope!
Coming into the finish.
And notice that here they are writing down her name as the winner and second place hasn't even made it to the last corner, 50m from the finish. That's just how SpeedMoore racing rolls!
After the racing, and while the other classes were having their races, Camilo and Amalia decided to run some more. Here is Camilo chasing Valentina, a girl from his class. They sort of like each other except that she pinches him so he hits her… great.
And here are Camilo and Amalia. She is teaching him how to work on his form. He has definitely transitioned from running like a toddler to running like a kid.
